Belarus to step up vegetable greenhouse production

Belarus to step up vegetable greenhouse production

MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) - We will build more greenhouse farms and modernize the existing ones to provide the domestic market with vegetables at affordable prices, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said during a meeting to discuss the development of greenhouse production at DorORS company, BelTA has learned.

Roman Golovchenko noted that the meeting was convened in order to sum up interim results of the work to implement the instructions of the head of state to provide the country with greenhouse crops at affordable prices in an off-season.

"Annual production volumes significantly exceed the needs of the domestic market, but there is some unevenness. As a follow-up to the president's instruction, the task was set to look into how these things can be settled with lowest costs and optimal effectiveness. We have the scientific base and support, we can get things done. The only question is economic sense and profitability. Now we are expanding the greenhouse areas and putting together plans for the construction and modernization of the country's greenhouse farms. We are also working on new technological solutions to increase efficiency," the head of government said as he opened the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the prime minister toured the greenhouses growing strawberries, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, tomatoes, and greens and also a greenhouse cultivating 28 varieties of roses.
