Belarus to increase renewable power generation capacity by 1.5 times by 2025

MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) – Belarus will expand the total renewable power generation capacity by 1.5 times to 750MW by 2025, Sergei Greben, the head of  energy efficiency, ecology and science at the Belarusian Energy Ministry, told journalists on 13 October, BelTA has learned.

As of 1 September, the installed capacity of the Belarusian power grid was 10,170MW. “The installed capacity of power-generating facilities that use renewable energy sources equaled 486.7MW. Their share was 4.8% of the total installed capacity (4% in 2019). In January-August 2020, the installed capacity of renewable energy sources rose by 82.1MW. Renewable power generation went up to 3.5% of the total power generation in Belarus. By 2025, the installed capacity of facilities that use renewable energy sources will be around 750MW,” Sergei Greben said.

According to him, the Energy Ministry is responsible for integration of power-generating facilities that use renewable energy sources into the national power grid using the tariffs set forth in the legislation. The ministry participates in the work of the quota allocation commission.

The renewable energy sources include solar, hydro, wind, and biogas energy.
