Belarus, Tajikistan to cooperate in engineering, agriculture

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) - Belarus and Tajikistan will develop cooperation in engineering and agriculture, Belarus Agriculture and Food Minister, chairman of the Belarusian part of the Belarusian-Tajik intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation Anatoly Khotko told the media before the meeting of the commission, BelTA has learned.

“We have outlined areas of interaction - engineering, agriculture, healthcare, culture. We have already started to address some issues. We have set up a joint venture in engineering [assembly of tractors in Hissor]. We need to build channels to move our goods, including through Tajikistan to neighboring countries. Work is underway on joint dairy companies. We will also cooperate in seed production using the expertise of our scientists to increase yields in Tajikistan,” Anatoly Khotko said.

Tajikistan Agriculture Minister, Chairman of the Tajik part of the intergovernmental commission Sattori Izzatullo noted that cooperation between the two countries has been developing fruitfully. “MTZ tractors assembled at the joint venture already work in the fields of Tajikistan to ensure food security. Cooperation in seed production, pedigree husbandry has been picking up steam. We will work closely with Belarusian scientists on heat-resistant and drought-tolerant varieties of crops for Tajikistan. The matter is particularly relevant due to climate change. We want our research institutes to work closer and implement scientific achievements into production,” he stressed. The minister also said that the joint milk processing plant will be commissioned in September 2019.

In 2018, the trade between Belarus and Tajikistan totaled $37.4 million. A wide lineup of Belarusian goods has already proved their worth on the Tajik market. These are tractors and truck tractors, wood chipboard, fiberboard, carpets and floor covering, polyacetals and polyester, tires. In turn, Tajik cotton fiber, cotton yarn, dried fruit, nuts and other products are popular in Belarus.
