Belarus, Russia sign set of agreements on regional cooperation

MOSCOW, 29 June (BelTA) – A number of agreements on regional cooperation between Belarus and Russia were signed in Moscow on the margins of the exhibition of innovations co-located with the fourth Forum of Regions, BelTA has learned.

For example, a partnership agreement was signed between the Brest Oblast Executive Committee and the Penza Oblast administration, an agreement on trade, economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation was inked between the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee and the Saratov Oblast administration. Vitebsk Oblast and Stavropol Krai also concluded an agreement on cooperation. In addition, an action plan to enhance the co-operation was signed between Belarus and Bryansk Oblast for 2017-2018 and a plan of events to promote cooperation between Belarus and Bryansk Oblast for 2017-2019.

“By means of accelerating the bilateral cooperation Belarus and Russia will be able to compete more successfully in foreign markets,” Chairperson of the Federation council Valentina Matviyenko told reporters. “We see a huge interest in the exhibition on the part of regions of Belarus and Russia. This says that now everybody understands that we should not simply increase the volume of mutual trade but also move towards joint ventures, major new joint projects, cooperation in high technology,” she said.

For his part, Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich added that there are good prospects for Belarus-Russia cooperation in industry and innovation. “We are competitive and feel confident in foreign markets. It is noteworthy that our companies have started to invest more in joint manufacture. These are billions of dollars a year. It is not just trade cooperation. These are innovative technologies which are used on our common Belarusian-Russian market,” he said.

This year the forum highlights the cooperation of Belarus and Russia in the innovative sector. The plenary session will be themed around Belarus-Russia interregional partnership in high technology, innovations, and information society. The Inter-Parliamentary Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation will hold a meeting on interregional cooperation. The business program of the forum includes breakout sessions with the participation of businessmen and relevant ministries and agencies. The participants will discuss ways to advance the development of hi-tech competitive enterprises in Belarus and Russia, step up the cooperation in science and technology, and strengthen the role of information technology in the development of civil society institutions in the Belarus-Russia Union State. They will also consider problems and prospects associated with the harmonization of the laws in the integration context, and prospects for the cooperation between IT companies. The cooperation of towns and regions of Belarus and Russia and the possible expansion of business ties between the two countries will be in the center of attention.

The exhibition showcasing the joint Belarusian-Russian projects in the field of innovation and high technology is co-located with the forum. A fair of Belarusian products that is also running during the forum features about 60 organizations of Belarus.

The Forum of Regions is designed to promote direct contacts between Belarusian and Russian executive and legislative authorities, business communities and to work out the recommendations for improving the legal framework in order to boost economic growth. The event is powered by the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Council of the Federation of Russia's Federal Assembly.
