Belarus, Russia reconcile plans to create common markets of gas, electricity

MINSK, 30 November (BelTA) – The energy ministries of Belarus and Russia have reconciled action plans to implement the Union State program to establish common markets of gas and electricity, Belarus’ Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich told the Respublika newspaper, BelTA has learned.

An interstate agreement on the establishment of a unified electricity market is currently in the works. Formats of collaboration, terms of interaction for electricity sellers and buyers, and infrastructure development matters are under discussion.

“As far as the gas sector is concerned, our Russian partners and us have to determine the fundamental principles of operation of the unified market and to ensure the convergence of working conditions for our enterprises,” Viktor Karankevich said.

The parties are also collaborating within the framework of the Union State nuclear energy program. The first steps to implement it were taken when an intergovernmental agreement on the transportation of nuclear materials was signed.

The preparation of a draft intergovernmental agreement on the management of spent nuclear fuel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is underway. The document is to be ready for signing by 1 July  2022.
