Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan discuss development of transport corridor to China

GOMEL, 21 June (BelTA) – The state motorway construction and maintenance agencies of Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan have discussed the project that envisages the development of joint transport corridors, BelTA learned from Belarusian First Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Alexei Avramenko. The official took part in the international motor rally Roads of Memory, which was timed to the 75th anniversary since the day the Great Patriotic War began. Participants of the motor rally made a stop in Gomel on 21 June.

Apart from taking part in solemn ceremonies and commemorative events representatives of the motorway construction and maintenance agencies of Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan met for a conference. Among other things the conference focused on building a motorway section as part of the transcontinental transport corridor that will connect China and Western Europe via Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus. Initially the Meridian motorway was supposed to connect Kazakhstan and Belarus via Russia’s south by joining the M1 motorway at the Belarusian border. However, Belarus suggested M4 and M10 motorways for the linkup. “We will have to address the matter via future trilateral talks. In any case taking part in the project is important for us, this is why the work to develop it will continue,” said the First Deputy Transport and Communications Minister.

Alexei Avramenko also mentioned the significance of the Road of Memory motor rally. “I think it will become a good tradition and the motorway construction and maintenance agencies will continue arranging commemorative events, getting the local population involved,” said the official.

The motor rally Road of Memory has been organized by the Russian motorway construction and maintenance agency Rosavtodor of the Russian Transport Ministry with assistance of the motorway construction and maintenance agencies of Belarus and Kazakhstan to mark the 75th anniversary since the day the Great Patriotic War began. The motor rally began in Murmansk on 12 June. Participants of the motor rally from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan travelled for over 2,000km, honoring the memory of war heroes in Murmansk Oblast, Leningrad Oblast, Pskov Oblast, and Smolensk Oblast. The motorcade will finish the run in the heroic city of Brest on 22 June, the day of memory and sorrow where the international historical reconstruction of the Brest Fortress of 22 June 1941 will take place.
