Belarus prime minister talks about prospects of cooperation with Russia’s Republic of Karelia

Belarus prime minister talks about prospects of cooperation with Russia’s Republic of Karelia

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko identified promising avenues of cooperation as he met with Head of Russia’s Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov, BelTA has learned.

Roman Golovchenko said: “We have no insignificant or secondary topics. Any project that may have practical value deserves attention and consideration. Let me give you a simple example. Everyone knows about Belarus’ mega project – the construction of a nuclear power plant in partnership with Rosatom Corporation. Today we are virtually in the final stage of this project. The first unit is already operating at rated power while the second one was connected to the Belarusian power grid on 13 May 2023.”

In his words, firefighting robots have been acquired from Karelia for the Belarusian nuclear power plant. “It is a good example of cooperation in the sphere of deliveries of high-tech products. It is with these bricks that we build the foundation of cooperation between Karelia and Belarus. And there are many examples like that,” the prime minister stressed.

In particular, Roman Golovchenko mentioned cooperation in deliveries of machines and vehicles for mining and processing enterprises as a promising area. BelAZ, the flagship of the Belarusian mechanical engineering industry has a long history of cooperation with Karelian partners. About 150 haul trucks are used in Karelia at present. New lots are shipped every year. There are plans for shipments in 2023, too, the prime minister noted. The possibility of shipping more trucks made by the Belarusian company MAZ will be considered as well.

Belarusian companies are taking an active part in the 2nd international stone milling forum Karelforum 2023 in Karelia. They are expected to work out new agreements on shipments of machines and vehicles to Karelian enterprises, Roman Golovchenko noted.

Apart from that, important avenues of Belarus-Karelia cooperation include forest industry, which is a leading branch of the economy of this Russian region, including forest restoration and timber processing. There are also great prospects in the sphere of tourism.

Apart from that, the sides will discuss matters concerning civil engineering, mutual shipments of construction materials, and other things.
