Belarus president talks about four pillars of economic development

Belarus president talks about four pillars of economic development

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Economic development of Belarus will rely on efforts to raise investments, business initiative, foreign trade, and changes in the demographic situation. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement in his address to members of both chambers of the parliament on 5 December, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “The economic development of our country will rely on four pillars in the medium term. We have to enable the best conditions for bringing investments into our country although I don’t know what else we can improve. We have to increase labor productivity by encouraging business initiative. We have to increase foreign trade by penetrating new target markets. We have to do much better in this regard. It seems I will have to build the entire policy around export the way it was done in the first years. If there is export, there will be a country. And we have to radically change the demographic situation.”

Although it is primarily the government’s job to see to these tasks, members of the parliament should pitch in as well, Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out. “These four areas should be the foundation for fulfilling your personal pre-election promises to your voters, to residents of the regions you represent. We have to work out an effective regional policy and bolster the role of municipal government agencies, the role of self-government in ensuring the social and economic development of the regions. It is what time requires us to do. It is what MPs should do,” the head of state noted. The president added he expected members of the parliament to come up with proposals on what and how should be changed at the local level.
