Belarus plans to phase out import of genetic stock for poultry industry soon

SOLIGORSK DISTRICT, 3 October (BelTA) -  Belarus intends to phase out the import of genetic stock for poultry farming within the next few years, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting on the development of the poultry industry in the country, BelTA has learned.

The meeting addressed the ways of reducing the industry's dependence on imports. Currently, Belarus has no alternative to importing chicks for the production of hatching eggs. Grandparent stock for broiler chickens is imported to supply parent stock for poultry farms. The same situation applies to the egg-laying poultry sector. Every poultry farm works directly with foreign partners.

“We have reached the point where we need to phase out the import of eggs [hatching eggs] in the near future. It may take another 5 to 7 years, if we and our scientists begin working on this immediately, to eliminate imports [in this sector],” the president said.

“Total dependence on imports does not guarantee the stable operation of poultry farms,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed. “Every shipment of birds carries the risk of introducing new infections and disrupting supplies (this is very relevant).” In this regard, the president inquired about the plans to address the issue of insufficient capacity at parent stock facilities for both egg and meat production.
