Belarus pediatric surgery generates $120,000-140,000 in export revenues annually

MINSK, 8 August (BelTA) – The export of medical services in pediatric surgery in Belarus is estimated at $120,000-140,000 annually, chief visiting pediatric cardiac surgeon of the Healthcare Ministry of Belarus, Director of the National Research Center for Pediatric Surgery Konstantin Drozdovsky told reporters on 8 August, BelTA has learned.

According to Konstantin Drozdovsky, Belarusian medical services are in demand due to the technologies Belarusian surgeons offer to foreign patients. “Every year we earn $120,000-140,000 on such surgeries. The bulk of patients comes from the neighboring countries of Russia and Ukraine; however, there are patients from Moldova and Kazakhstan,” he said.

Speaking about the number of children operated by Belarusian surgeons, Konstantin Drozdovsky said that figures vary depending on a year. “For example, a heart surgery costs from $7,000 to $10,000 depending on the severity of a patient’s condition and the period of a hospital stay. At the same time, endoscopic surgeries are in great demand. They are not so expensive, therefore many patients go for it,” Konstantin Drozdovsky said.

Belarus is actively promoting its medical services abroad. Several months ago, a team of Belarusian specialists took part in an exhibition in Uzbekistan. The Belarusian specialists arranged a screening of congenital heart disorders on the sidelines of the forum. The screening aroused a huge interest in locals; many took advantage of the opportunity. As a result, the first patient from Uzbekistan has already been operated, the director of the research center said.
