Belarus-Moldova joint venture to produce cognac in Brest Oblast

BREST, 11 April (BelTA) – A Belarus-Moldova joint venture will grow vine and produce cognac from it in Brest Oblast. A corresponding letter of intent was signed during the 4th international B2B contact fair Brest 2019 on 11 April, BelTA has learned.

A tripartite cooperation agreement was signed by Brestmyasomolprom Concern, Planta-Vin research enterprise (Moldova) and Belarus-Moldova joint venture Codru. The implementation of the project will be discussed on the sidelines of the B2B contact fair.

“We will start selecting vine varieties and preparing facilities for cognac maturation. As for now, the production will be based in Mankovichi, our factory in Stolin District. Scientific support will be provided by the Moldovan side and Polesie State University, Director General of Brestmyasomolprom Concern Mikhail Serkov said.

Several panel sessions will be arranged to discuss the details of the project. The final roadmap of the project is to be presented and approved at the business forum hosted by Polesie State University at the end of May.

Taking part in the Brest 2019 forum was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Moldova to Belarus Victor Sorocean. He emphasized Moldova’s great interest in the project. “The thing is that climate has changed. It grew much warmer in Moldova. It is bad for cognac production, because cognac vine should contain less sugar than it does today. There are places in Brest Oblast where we can grow vine specifically for
cognac production. We are glad that Brestmyasomolprom Concern joined this large-scale and interesting project,” the diplomat said.
