Belarus looking into South Korean experience of digital transformation of industrial sector

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) – Belarus is studying the experience of the Republic of Korea regarding the organization of digital transformation of the industrial sector, representatives of the Belarusian Economy Ministry told BelTA.

A Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar was in South Korea on a visit on 23 February – 2 March. The delegation also included First Deputy Communications and Informatization Minister Dmitry Shedko, Deputy Healthcare Minister Boris Androsyuk, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian state petrochemical concern Belneftekhim Vitaly Milevich, specialists of the Economy Ministry, the Education Ministry, representatives of organizations accountable to the Industry Ministry, the State Standardization Committee, top officials of the scientific and technological association Infopark and the association Robotics & AI.

Members of the delegation looked into key aspects of organization of digital transformation of the industrial sector in South Korea as part of the program, which has enabled the sharing of the best practices with a view to possibly adopting them in Belarus.

In particular, members of the delegation met with representatives of the Presidential Committee on the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is a coordinating and consulting body operating under the aegis of the Korean president to work out strategic decisions on digital economy development. Members of the Belarusian delegation also visited the regional Gyeongnam Technopark and a number of large companies, including transnational ones specializing in pharmaceutics, automobile engineering, and petrochemical industry with a track record in embracing digital technologies for manufacturing purposes.

Apart from that, a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the Republic of Korea Andrei Popkov took place. The sides discussed interaction of Belarusian government agencies with South Korea in a broad spectrum of directions of cooperation, including the development of a smart industry, R&D efforts, and the use of the public private partnership potential.

The Belarusian delegation received the signed memorandum of understanding on sharing knowledge between the Economy and Finance Ministry of the Republic of Korea and the Belarusian Economy Ministry.

Economy Ministry representatives noted that the Belarusian delegation had been able to get a systemic and comprehensive understanding about the scale, organization, and directions of development of the South Korean smart industry. The knowledge represents a serious foundation for working out and implementing strategic directions to develop digital economy in Belarus.

The visit was hailed as an important step for accumulating the competences that launching the digital transformation of the Belarusian economy on a large scale requires.
