Belarus invited to use Sakhalin as springboard for exports to Pacific Rim countries

MINSK, 9 June (BelTA) – Belarus can use Russia’s Sakhalin Oblast as a springboard for selling jointly manufactured goods to the Pacific Rim countries, Sakhalin Oblast Governor Oleg Kozhemyako told reporters during a meeting with Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats on 9 June, BelTA has learned.

“We are considering the possibility of using Sakhalin Oblast as a springboard for selling jointly manufactured goods to the Pacific Rim countries. Sakhalin has good climatic conditions for milk and meat cattle breeding. With Belarusian technologies, equipment and public trust in the quality of Belarusian goods, we will supply Sakhalin Oblast residents with foodstuffs and will also export products to the Pacific Rim countries,” Oleg Kozhemyako stressed.

He noted that Sakhalin Oblast’s proximity to Chinese, Korean and Japanese ports will contribute to this. “Besides, we have plans to use Belarusian waste disposal technologies at our agricultural enterprises. We are also negotiating with the Belarusian side construction of a baby food production enterprise in Sakhalin Oblast,” Oleg Kozhemyako added.

Six documents were signed during the meeting at the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry. They are aimed at bolstering the cooperation between Belarus and Sakhalin Oblast. The documents include a cooperation agreement with the research center for agriculture mechanization of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus to supply three potato sorting lines to the tune of €721,000, a cooperation agreement with Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ trademark) to ship 50 tractors to Sakhalin Oblast, and contracts with Lidagroprommash, Belkommunmash, Bobruiskagromash, and MAZ-Kupava.
