Belarus identifies economic recovery, higher trade as CIS goals for now

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Igor Petrishenko took part in a videoconference session of the CIS Economic Council on 9 December, the press service of the Belarusian government told BelTA.

The official said that at present the Commonwealth of Independent States has to take effective measures to recover from the economic recession, to step up mutual trade and foreign trade, to restore normal business contacts and labor migration. “I am convinced we will be able to more easily accomplish these goals if we better coordinate and combine our efforts,” Igor Petrishenko said. He identified economy, healthcare, and security as the top cooperation priorities in the near future.

Igor Petrishenko believes it is of extreme importance to focus on fulfilling the action plan on implementing the first stage of the CIS economic development strategy for the period till 2030. “We expect a noticeable effect from the interstate program on innovative cooperation, the concept of interregional and transboundary cooperation and priority directions of cooperation in the sphere of transport,” he noted.

Igor Petrishenko pointed out that the removal of barriers, the enabling of free merchandise trade in the CIS space, the simplification of administrative procedures for trade and for doing business, manufacturing cooperation, efforts to step up cooperation in the sphere of investments, innovations, transportation, and other spheres remain topical tasks. “When other countries shut themselves down, when international trade once again faces a wave of protectionism, we, partners within the Commonwealth of Independent States, have to safeguard the CIS free trade zone as much as possible,” he added.

The Belarusian side believes it is advisable to consider the possibility of getting down to work on a step-by-step unification of the CIS legal base with highly sought cutting-edge regulatory acts of the Eurasian Economic Union and the world’s best practices of integration cooperation. “We invite the CIS Executive Committee to thoroughly study the matter, including with assistance of the Eurasian Economic Commission, and send concrete proposals to the CIS member states,” the official said.
