Belarus, Georgia to open lift assembly facility in Tbilisi

TBILISI, 21 March (BelTA) - Belarus and Georgia are opening a facility to assemble lifts in Tbilisi, Ambassador of Belarus to Georgia Mikhail Myatlikov said in an interview with BelTA.

“The project to set up the assembly production of lifts in Georgia is getting off the ground. About 25,000 lifts need to be modernized in Georgia. Of them at least 50% are of Belarusian make (by Mogilevliftmash). They were supplied back in the Soviet period. First of all, this project targets the Georgian market, such cities as Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi,” the ambassador noted.

Speaking about the prospects of joint ventures in Georgia, he noted that the capacity of the Georgian market is not big. However, Georgia has free trade agreements with countries in different regions. It is therefore possible to consider organizing joint ventures with an eye on markets of third countries.

“However, when setting up assembly facilities we need to understand that a certain level of localization is required. It is not always possible to achieve this level. But if it is achieved, then the product acquires the status of a Georgian-made product and can be delivered to the markets of third countries in the framework of free trade agreements. In the production of lifts we can achieve this level of localization. Automated equipment and metal are available. Elevator cabins are delivered. We can set up a joint venture with the necessary level of localization,” Ambassador Mikhail Myatlikov said.

According to the diplomat, everything in Georgia goes through tenders, no matter whether it is an imported or domestic product. There are no preferences to domestic producers. Companies that set up production facilities under the Produce in Georgia program get subsidies from the state.

Belarus’ Prime Minister Mikhail Rusy and Georgian First Vice Prime Minister – minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitri Kumsishvili visited the lift production facility in Tbilisi on 21 March. The enterprise is part of the Georgian Technical University.

The annual output is projected to reach 100 units in 2018, 250 in 2019 and about 500 in 2020. The facility is expected to increase the level of localization, the use of new technological processes and to launch the production of individual nodes. Now the level of localization is approximately 50-52%, and will reach 60-65% in the long term. “Today we need specialists to work out the whole range of lifting equipment: passenger, cargo, escalator, for barrier-free environment, lifting mechanisms. The facility has a good future,” Mikhail Rusy said.

Furthermore, given the close relationship with the university, the facility will provide on-the-job training to future specialists.
