Belarus’ export of peat products up by 1.4 times in January-October

MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) – Belarus’ export of peat products increased by 1.4 times in January-October, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich told a press conference in BelTA’s press center.
"In 2022, the peat industry met the targets, ramped up peat production by 1.5 times over last year to 2.4 million tonnes. Peat briquette plants are gradually expanding the scope of their operations, supplying peat for the needs of the manufacturing industries, cement plants, housing and utilities sectors and the agriculture industry," Viktor Karankevich said.
The range of peat products for non-fuel purposes is being refreshed. This year, the peat briquette production unit Berezovskoye in Ivatsevichi District launched the production of peat cover materials for the champignons growing sector. "This is a new thing for the peat industry, which will be a good contributor to the domestic mushroom growing sector," the minister said.
Export supplies of peat products are being diversified. "This year, the peat producers entered the Chinese market. In September, the Turshovka plant sent the first railway train with peat to Chinese consumers. China’s export accreditation was granted to the Glinka and Vitebsktorf plants that are preparing to send another large batch of peat, Viktor Karankevich said. "In general, in January-October of 2022, the export of peat products increased by 1.4 times year-on-year and amounted to 218,000 tonnes. In monetary terms this is worth over $17 million.”
The key areas for the further development of the industry are outlined in the program of comprehensive modernization of the peat industry for 2021-2025. The main emphasis is made on the development of raw material bases. "Plans are in place to develop 3,700 hectares of new peat fields. The production capacity of the peat plants will also be expanded. For example, the Turshovka plant is planning to commission a new facility by the end of 2025," the minister said.
