Belarus expects to attract €90m from World Bank to tackle COVID-19

MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) – Belarus expects to get €90 million from the World Bank soon to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, Belarus’ First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Krutoi told the media on 7 May, BelTA has learned.

“The first €90 million healthcare project with the World Bank enters homestretch. We have already completed all our internal procedures. The bank is almost ready, too. I think that very soon there will be an announcement about the project taking effect,” said Dmitry Krutoi.

In his words, video contacts with colleagues from international financial institutions are maintained, and banks have been provided with the documents they requested.

“We are currently in talks at the level of technical experts and expect final decisions from them. This work proceeds in a daily mode, including with the IMF,” the first vice premier said.

As BelTA reported earlier, Belarus is currently in talks with the World Bank, the IMF, the Development Bank of China, the European Investment Bank, governments of certain countries with a view to get financial support to recover from the coronavirus epidemic. In total Belarus expects to attract about $2-2.5 billion from outside lenders.
