Belarus’ economy to prioritize development of large enterprises

Belarus’ economy to prioritize development of large enterprises

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian economy will prioritize the development of large enterprises in the future, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in his State of the Nation Address on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian economy will rely on the development of large enterprises and production venues in the future. This is our overriding priority,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president emphasized that the strong economy is the foundation of a successful state, and Belarus has done a lot over the years of independence. For example, the gross domestic product per capita and in terms of the production parity went up almost five times, and the production output increased almost 2.5 times.

“There was no uncontrollable distribution of property. We did not ruin the legacy which had been accumulated in the post-war country for decades. We preserved and enriched this legacy,” the head of state said.

In his words, all that was done thanks to the efforts of people with trust in Belarus at the dawn of independence when salaries were about $20, those who restored many things and these things make us proud today. “They gave a new lease life to enterprises which were at the brink of collapse in the early 1990s. Many people remember that. Belaruskali, oil refineries, BelAZ, MAZ, MTZ, BMZ, just to name a few. Without any exaggeration, products of these enterprises are famous all over the world. It has become our national asset today,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president emphasized that Belarus is not satisfied with what has already been achieved: new samples of specialized equipment, electric transport, cars and car parts, innovative agricultural and military equipment are designed in the country.

“We have created good conditions for the development of SMEs. Now it’s your turn to act. But remember that some work is to be done around our production giants. This is how we will manage to solve major tasks, namely, to create new jobs and promote import substitution,” the head of state added.

At the same time, Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked that the calls to develop SMEs sometimes produce adverse effects. People do not launch new production and choose small trade instead. “They say that we should look at Italy, for example. And I am going to say that small businesses in Italy produce everything, from musical instruments to cutting-edge military hardware,” the president said.

He remarked that Belarus welcomes such SMEs and will provide comprehensive assistance to them. However, we should not forget about those enterprises which bring us glory and wealth. “If you want full independence in production, if you are are interested in arts and crafts, go ahead, you have all conditions for that. But do not forget that the glory, wealth and power of the nation relies on strong enterprises,” the Belarusian leader stressed.
