Belarus, Chile to bolster trade and economic ties

MOSCOW, 26 June (BelTA) - Belarus and Chile will take measures to strengthen trade and economic cooperation. Belarusian Ambassador to Russia Igor Petrishenko discussed these matters with a delegation from the Chilean Foreign Ministry, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian diplomatic mission.

“During the meeting the parties specifically discussed the bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The parties had a meaningful exchange of views on possible steps to intensify Belarusian-Chilean cooperation in this area. In this connection, particular attention was paid to the need to develop the necessary legal framework of bilateral relations," the press service noted.

The Chilean delegation got familiar with the progress and prospects of the Eurasian economic integration.

The Chilean delegation was led by Director of the General Directorate of International Economic Relations at the Foreign Ministry of Chile Andres Rebolledo (in charge of foreign trade) and Ambassador of Chile to the Russian Federation and concurrently to Belarus Juan Eduardo Eguiguren Guzman.

Diplomatic relations between Belarus and Chile were established in January 1992. In 2013, the bilateral trade amounted to $25.3 million, of which $4.8 million was Belarusian export.

The Chilean delegation also visited the Eurasian Economic Commission headquarters where they met with the member of the EEC board (minister) for integration and macroeconomics Tatiana Valovaya, BelTA learned from the EEC press service. Tatyana Valovaya noted that in the context of the international division of labor Chile and the member states of the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space are more partners in foreign markets than competitors, which opens up great opportunities for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation.
