MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – The organizations of the Belarusian Forestry Ministry plans to plant trees covering some 32,335 hectares in 2020. The majority of planting works will take place in spring, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.

The forestries have launched tree planting, developing 5,000 hectares of forests already. “Due to the change of temperature conditions and the absence of a frosty winter, the tree planting season has kicked off unusually early. Plans are in place to plant at least 32,335 hectares of forests this year. The majority of works will be conducted in spring,” the press service said.

According to the operational data, forestries have already met some 15% of the plans. An estimated 3,506 hectares of forests have been planted by Gomel foresters. The major focus is on the restoration of dried or burnt forest areas.

Today Belarus is among the top ten most forested countries in Europe. The average forest cover has reached its record highest of 39.9% since 1945. Every year Belarusian forestries plant at least 30,000 hectares of forests. “The emphasis is made on the development of mixed forests (two or more tree species). This improves the resistance of forests to various biological and climatic factors,” the ministry said. In 2019, the national forestries conducted afforestation works on some 51,800 hectares, including 43,800 hectares of new forests.
