Bangladesh shows interest in Belarus NPP construction experience

VIENNA, 27 September (BelTA) – Bangladesh is interested in the Belarusian experience of its nuclear power plant construction, Belarus’ Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told media on the sidelines of the IAEA’s 60th session of the General Conference in Vienna on 27 September, BelTA has learned.

According to the deputy minister, a preliminary agreement was reached for a visit of Bangladeshi representatives to Belarus in 2017 to discuss cooperation.

Bangladesh’s interest can be explained by the country being building its first nuclear power plant Rooppur. Bangladesh intends to take into account the best world practices in the construction of the plant, including Belarus' experience. Russia’s Atomstroyexport is the general contractor of the Rooppur construction, the same as of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP). The Belarusian and Bangladeshi projects will both have two power generating units with the output capacity of up to 1,200MW each. The 3+ power generating units will secure safe and reliable operation of the stations. The first unit of the Rooppur is set to be commissioned in 2022.

Mikhail Mikhadyuk noted that the Belarusian delegation discussed a wide range of issues with foreign colleagues during the IAEA General Conference.
