Astrakhan Oblast governor opines on cooperation prospects with Belarus

Astrakhan Oblast governor opines on cooperation prospects with Belarus

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – Astrakhan Oblast Governor Igor Babushkin outlined the main areas of cooperation between Belarus and the Russian region as he met with Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko, BelTA has learned.

A serious impetus to cooperation between Belarus and Astrakhan Oblast was given at a joint meeting in Astrakhan Oblast in October last year, Igor Babushkin noted. “The Belarusian delegation voiced a number of remarks that had to be seriously considered. We studied the possibility of supplying municipal equipment. The demand of Astrakhan Oblast is now 270 units. Now the details of the delivery, payment schemes and the list of products that we are going to purchase are under discussion,” said the governor.

In addition, the parties have made significant progress on agreements in the construction industry. “The construction of the new Astrakhan neighborhood Teply [Warm], which we discussed last time, is now entering the implementation stage. We expect Belarusian construction workers to build a school, two kindergartens and to create the necessary infrastructure,” said Igor Babushkin.

Astrakhan Oblast keeps buying elevators from Mogilevliftmash. “The region needs to replace about a thousand elevators,” the governor informed.

Agriculture is also a promising cooperation avenue for Belarus and Astrakhan Oblast. “We are actively exchanging seed stock. We have supplied about 7.4 tonnes of vegetables and gourds to Belarus. We also supply wool, potatoes, fish. Today we are preparing farmland for growing rice. This is another area where we can cooperate with Belarusian partners,” the governor said.

According to Igor Babushkin, products from Belarus are in demand in Astrakhan Oblast - these are clothes, food, footwear, cosmetics, equipment, etc. “I would like to note that the Minsk Tractor Works center is now operating at full capacity - now there are 300 types of equipment on this site. In the first months of this year alone, we purchased 40 units of equipment,” he added.
