MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) - Trade and economic cooperation is an important avenue of cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Republic of Azerbaijan Andrei Ravkov said in an interview with the daily newspaper Novoye Vremya, BelTA has learned.

"Economy has always been at the forefront of our partnership. It yields real tangible and mutually beneficial result for both parties. A practical confirmation of this is the steady growth of trade which totaled almost $1billion last year alone," the diplomat said.

Trade in main commodities has been growing this year too. It is especially important that there is practically parity between exports and imports. "We supply engineering products, electrical goods, medicines, dairy and meat products and other food products to Azerbaijan. Import of fruit and vegetable products from Azerbaijan to Belarus is a great contributor to trade. For example, we have tripled the purchase of tomatoes this year alone," Ambassador Andrei Ravkov noted.

There is a commodity distribution network of Belarusian manufacturers in Azerbaijan, while 45 dealers represent more than 50 Belarusian companies in the country. The Azerbaijan trading house successfully operates in Minsk.

“In addition to direct trade in goods, Belarus and Azerbaijan are developing cooperative ties. The cooperation of the Belarusian machine-builders with the Ganja automobile plant is a landmark project for the two countries, which has showed an excellent example of effective cooperation in industrial cooperation. Over 12,000 tractors Belarus and about 4,000 units of other Belarusian machinery have been assembled at Ganja over 15 years,” the head of the diplomatic mission said.

“In June 2022 we held the 12th meeting of the intergovernmental commission, discussed in detail all the issues of our economic agenda and identified steps to implement the tasks set by our heads of state and government,” the ambassador said. “A relevant protocol was signed at the end of the meeting. This step ensured further deepening of cooperation in the whole range of bilateral trade and economic relations and introduction of new mutually beneficial projects.”

“Azerbaijan is our reliable and most important partner,” Andrei Ravkov said.
