Academician opines on import substitution, science development amidst sanctions

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Belarusian scientists are not just ready to respond to the sanctions and offer their own solutions for import substitution, they are already doing it, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA informs.

“We have been working on import substitution for a long time, not only in connection with the sanctions. We have recently reviewed our developments, compiled a large list and sent it to the Council of Ministers and the Industry Ministry. Our main goal is to develop solutions that can be incorporated into all sectors of the domestic economy and enterprises,” Vladimir Gusakov said. He cited an example: today Belarusian scientists are actively engaged in software development, microelectronics, robotics, mechanical engineering, agricultural technologies, etc. “It is all about import substitution. No economy can grow and advance without science,” the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences noted.

“We maintain closest ties with the Russian Academy of Sciences, with a number of institutes, we run joint projects and have joint plans. We are now completing the development of a program of fundamental research with the Kurchatov Institute. We hope that a branch of this institute will open here. We have found a building and now we are in talks about new devices and equipment, there will be joint laboratories, personnel will be trained. And we collaborate with a number of other institutions. We should come up with solutions that our economies need,” Vladimir Gusakov shared.

He also noted that everything that is developed by the National Academy of Sciences is implemented. “Now science is in great demand at all enterprises. Two weeks ago, we held a joint meeting with BelAZ where we took stock of our work and outlined cooperation prospects. Similar meetings will be held with a number of other enterprises, including MAZ, MTZ and others. Development prospects of these companies are dim without science,” Vladimir Gusakov concluded.
