11.7bn kWh of electricity generated by Belarusian nuclear power plant’s first unit so far

OSTROVETS DISTRICT, 3 February (BelTA) – The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has generated 11.7 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity since its linkup to the national power grid, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk.

According to the source, it allowed substituting about 3.3 billion m3 of natural gas. The first unit is now operating at its rated output.

Once the second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is commissioned, the power plant will generate about 18.5 kWh of electricity every year and will satisfy about 40% of the country’s domestic demand.

In addition to guaranteeing Belarus’ energy security the nuclear power plant represents the country’s contribution to the common cause of alleviating climate change consequences. Carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by about 7 million tonnes per annum thanks to the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
