Visa-free entry for 2014 IIHF WC fans valid 25 April-30 May

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – A visa-free entry for the fans of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship which is due in Minsk in 2014 will be valid 25 April through 30 May, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Leonid Maltsev said at the House of Representatives meeting on 5 December, BelTA has learnt.

“The entry for people coming to Belarus for the championship will be visa-free from 25 April to 30 May. Only passports and tickets, printed or digital, will be needed to cross the border,” c said.

According to the official, a total of 15 major border checkpoints are expected to see the biggest inflow of participants and guests of the world’s big sport event. Among them is Minsk National Airport, Minsk-1 and Gomel airports, eight border crossings for motorists (Kamenny Log, Kotlovka, Berestovitsa, Bruzgi, Brest, Domachevo, Novaya Rudnya, Novaya Guta) and four rail border crossings – Gudogai, Brest, Teryukha, Terekhovka.

Leonid Maltsev informed that there are plans to introduce an electronic queuing system at the Belarusian border. This work is underway. The State Border Committee has already chosen a border checkpoint to test the system.

The electronic queuing system will require the development of special service zones at the border. There are plans for the construction of small hotels there. Leonid Maltsev stressed that it was a long-pending issue: “The faster we do it, the better as, unfortunately, some queues, especially those of truck vehicles, make up some 12 hours.”

Very soon motorists will be able to register for the border crossing online. In order to use the system, travelers will need to access the State Border Committee website to schedule their border crossing. Leonid Maltsev explained: “For instance, you schedule your border crossing time on 11h00 to 12h00. If you do not make to the border in time, you take the general queue.”

The head of the committee stressed there were no special legal points regarding the creation of the electronic queuing system.
