MFA Press Secretary Andrei Popov responds to a media question over recent remarks by the Polish politicians and reports in the Polish media with regard to Belarus

Question: How does the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Belarus access the recent remarks of the Polish politicians and media with respect to Belarus?

Response: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus is concerned at the unfolding anti-Belarusian campaign in Poland which could seriously damage the relationship between Belarus and Poland.

As Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Martynov clearly stated during his working visit to Warsaw on 12 February 2010, the rights of national minorities are legally guaranteed and ensured in our country. This fully bears on the Polish national minority. The Belarusian state renders considerable support for the minority’s cultural and education activities on the permanent basis. The Polish media coverage warping things and facts as they are misleads political groups and public opinion and negatively affects the overall climate of the Belarus-Poland relationship.

Recent remarks in Poland about the intention of introducing visa sanctions against the Belarusian nationals, appeals for restrictive measures against Belarus, including those of economic character, do not help remove far-fetched tension in the relationship between Belarus and Poland and run counter to a provision of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act related to inadmissibility of imposing economic sanctions to put pressure on sovereign countries.

We are ready to undertake joint efforts on securing the existing level and further development of the Belarus-Poland relationship on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in domestic affairs. We are confident this would meet the interests of the people of our countries and of the stability on the European continent.
