Novopolotsk turns 60!

Novopolotsk turns 60!
9 Jun 2018

The name of the city derives from the name of Polotsk, the most ancient town of Belarus, the once capital of the Principality of Polotsk. Novopolotsk’s history began exactly 60 years ago when the country launched the construction of a new industrial and scientific center a dozen kilometers to the west of Polotsk. The official date of Novopolotsk’s founding is 7 June 1958. Novopolotsk’s history, short by historical standards, is closely connected with the construction of the largest oil refinery Naftan in the 1950s-1960s, which has remained one of Belarus’ top brands for many decades. In the first week of summer 2018, Novopolotsk celebrated its birthday in style. By the way, this year the city holds the honorary title of The Capital of Culture of Belarus 2018, which is quite symbolic.

Since 1 June Novopolotsk lived in a holiday mode. Concerts, meetings, promotions, literary quests, exhibitions… All in all, the list of events featured more than 45 activities. The Palace of Children and Youth reopened after renovations on the International Children's Day. Within the framework of the project “Novopolotsk - from inclusive school to inclusive city” the palace was adjusted for people with disabilities. The new city festival of bard music “Seven Strings of the Soul” debuted on the evening of Saturday, 2 June. On 7 June the city chose Miss Novopolotsk. The title went to 20-year-old Daria Urban. On 8 June the residents paid tribute to the first-builders: The First Tent monument had a new memorial plaque added. It is dedicated to the first director of Neftezavodmontazh plant Leonid Ashmyan.

In the evening Novopolotsk hosted the Belarus Song of the Year 2018 music festival. The festival is an annual showcase event for the Belarusian music industry. The concert starred Yadviga Poplavskaya, Anastasia Tikhanovich, Aleksei Khlestov, Victoria Aleshko, Teo and Olga Ryzhikova, Elena Grishanova, Galina Shishkova, Alyona Lanskaya, and Anna Sharkunova. The festival opened with the song When You Wake Up Early dedicated to the Year of the Native Land. The song was performed by Belarusian rising star Lera Yaskevich.

About 3,000 people gathered to take part in a solemn procession on 9 June. Those were representatives of labor collectives and public organizations, local authorities, and famous natives of Novopolotsk. The message of greetings from Alexander Lukashenko was read out by Head of the Belarus President Administration Natalya Kochanova. By the way, she is not new to the city, as she had been Novopolotsk mayor for seven years.

The festival went on with an award ceremony to celebrate Novopolotsk’s citizens of honor. The awardees were greeted by Natalya Kochanova and Vice-Premier Vladimir Semashko. The award ceremony was followed by a concert starring popular Belarusian artists and the city’s best performers.
