Maslenitsa in Gomel

The highlight of the Pancake Week in Gomel was Belarus’ first rooster beauty contest "Guard, warrior, and singer – harbinger of the sun!" Partaking in the competition were ten birds. The jury evaluated the height of the crest, the spread of the wings, and the size of the heels of the nominees. The owners of the roosters also participated in the contest demonstrating their rapport with the pets and answering questions about the birds and the holiday. Thoroughbred rooster Petruchio, the pet of the Yezersky family, became winner of the beauty contest. The family presented an interesting rite of spring with the participation of their pet.

The program of the contest also featured an exhibition of fancy birds “Novobelitsk poultry yard” that showcased birds of different breeds and species. The guests of the festive event took part in workshops and tournaments. At the end of the celebrations, the effigy of the winter was traditionally put to the flames of a bonfire.
