Lukashenko: Presidential election in Belarus will be honest and in line with the Constitution

MINSK, 9 June (BelTA) – The Belarusian presidential election will be held properly and in line with the Constitution, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said during a working meeting with chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission Lidiya Yermoshina on 9 June, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko reminded that at the end of the previous year there were many speculations that the presidential election would be held ahead of schedule. “There were a lot of speculations at the end of the previous year that Lukashenko would hold the election in February or March before the situation in the country changes for the worse, that he would use the situation in Ukraine and so on and so forth. Back than I said that we would hold the election honestly and on time. We keep our word,” the President noted.

The Central Election Commission should put forward its proposals regarding the concrete date of the presidential election; the parliament will make a decision on this issue. “We will discuss the date of the presidential election together. Everything will be done properly and in line with the Constitution,” Alexander Lukashenko stressed.

According to the President, in the near future he will hold a meeting with the government officials who will organize the election campaign. In accordance with the legislation, the Central Election Commission will play a leading role in this process.

Lidiya Yermoshina, in turn, noted that the Central Election Commission has been gearing up for the presidential election for the whole year. For example, guidelines for election commissions which are assembled within a few days after the date of the election is determined will be printed soon. Meanwhile, it is still necessary to solve a number of issues before the beginning of the election campaign, the chairperson of the Central Election Commission said.
