Lukashenko, Bordyuzha discussing forthcoming CSTO summit in Astana

MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Nikolai Bordyuzha are discussing the preparation for the forthcoming informal CSTO summit in Astana on 12 August, BelTA has learnt.

Alexander Lukashenko noted that many serious issues need to be discussed against the backdrop of the recent global developments.

“We need to discuss the current situation, issues that can arise unexpectedly,” the President said. Alexander Lukashenko believes that the military and political bloc CSTO should coordinate and plan its actions. “There is nothing to hide here, the entire Muslim world is in turmoil, it might affect our Muslim countries, too, first of all, Tajikistan; Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are beset with problems; the situation is heating up in Kazakhstan, too,” the Belarusian head of state said. He is convinced that this issue will be placed top on the agenda.

Other issues to be discussed in Kazakhstan on 12 August include military and economic cooperation.

Alexander Lukashenko asked Nikolai Bordyuzha to tell him about his visit to Armenia and Tajikistan and “to look at the 12 August meeting through the perspective of these events”. The Belarusian President was interested in Nikolai Bordyuzha’s view on what topics should brought to attention of the presidents at the summit.

Nikolai Bordyuzha thanked the Belarusian President for finding time to meet him at his first request to discuss burning issues. The CSTO Secretary General is set to brief the Belarusian head of state on the work of the organization over the last month and the visits to CSTO member states. Nikolai Bordyuzha will voice his suggestions regarding the agenda of the CSTO informal summit in Kazakhstan.
