Belarus ranks 53rd in HDI among 187 countries

MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – Belarus takes a high 53rd position in the Human Development Index which is 0.786, BelTA learnt from the UN Public Relations Department in Belarus.

Belarus tops the list of countries with the High Human Development Index and perhaps it will be able to be among the very high HDI countries in the coming years. During the period between 2005 and 2013 HDI for Belarus increased by 8.4% from 0.725 to 0.786.

It stands to mention that Belarus’ HDI is above the average for high HDI countries (it equals 0.735) and above average for the European and Central Asian countries (0.738). For example, Serbia and Azerbaijan with the almost equal population as Belarus are ranked in this rating 78th and 76th respectively.

The human development report is an UN annual publication since 1990. The Human Development Report 2014 “Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience, considers two concepts which are closely related and are vital to secure progress in human development.

Human Development Index (HDI) is an integrated indicator used for cross-country comparisons and calculated annually on the basis of the following UNDP components: A long and healthy life (life expectancy at birth); Education index (mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling); A decent standard of living (GNI per capita (PPP US$).

The Human Development Report 2014 contains the Human Development Index 2014 (definitions and the rating) for 187 countries and territories recognized by the United Nations, the Inequality Adjusted Human Development Index for 145 countries, the Gender-Related Development Index for 148 countries, the Gender Inequality Index for 149 countries and the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index for 91 countries.
