Over 7,700 candidates nominated to run in local elections in Belarus

Over 7,700 candidates nominated to run in local elections in BelarusMINSK, 28 December (BelTA) – Over 7,700 people have been nominated to run for the seats on the local councils of deputies of the 28th convocation in Belarus. Such information has been posted on the website of the Belarusian Central Election commission (CEC), BelTA has learned.

Most often, candidates are nominated through the collection of signatures. About 70% of the candidates has been nominated this way. Some 28% has been nominated by labor collectives, and 1.8% by political parties. Two or even three methods can be used to get nominated.

Six parties have nominated their candidates for deputies so far. These include the Belarusian Agrarian Party, the Belarusian Left Party "A Just World", the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Hramada), the Communist Party of Belarus, the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus and the Republican Party of Labor and Justice.

According to the CEC, more than 4,000 of the candidates, or nearly 52.5%, are members of the current legislature, 337 are young people (under 30). This is approximately 4.4% of the total number of the nominated candidates. More than 4,000, or about 52.7% are women.

Most candidates work in education, culture, science, and healthcare (almost 32%), and also in agriculture (20.9%).

Nomination of candidates to deputies is running from 10 December to 8 January. The elections are scheduled for 18 February. More than 18,000 members of the local councils will be elected.
