CSTO PA Council passes statements on preventing arms race in outer space, fight against drugs

CSTO PA Council passes statements on preventing arms race in outer space, fight against drugs

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Two important statements were passed by the session of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA) in Minsk: on preventing an arms race in outer space and on counteracting the abuse of narcotics among children and youth and on promoting a healthy lifestyle among them, BelTA learned from Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko after the session.

Vladimir Andreichenko said: “Two important statements were passed. One of them deals with the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in outer space. The matter may not seem that important today. But who knows what will happen tomorrow. Not only nuclear weapons but other kinds of weapons that will present a serious threat to the mankind may appear.”

The second statement passed upon the initiative of the Belarusian side calls for stepping up the fight against the propagation of narcotics among young people and teenagers. “It is a very important matter today and serious attention has been paid to it in Belarus recently. The most important thing is that positive advances have been secured in this field. We would like not to fight this evil alone. We would like other international parliamentary platforms to also focus on these issues [of the counteraction of the spread of narcotics],” the head of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament noted.

Participants of the session of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly also discussed the observation of elections in CSTO countries and corrected the program of model lawmaking for the 2021-2025 period. Participants of the session also talked over the military and political situation in the region and Belarus’ presidency over the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

According to Vladimir Andreichenko, the session of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly was constructive and productive. It is obvious that views of the heads of the parliaments of the CSTO countries on matters on the international agenda mainly coincide, he remarked.

Moreover, during the meeting with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko earlier on 18 May the unity of the CSTO countries in counteracting Western sanctions and blackmail was emphasized, Vladimir Andreichenko noted. “We should do our best in the name of our countries, in the name of peace, security, and prosperity of our people. But today it is very important not to stir up the situation both at the external contour and the internal one. And we should come up with our own security and fairness strategy,” the MP said.
