MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ best practices have been presented at a meeting of the UNECE Group of Experts on Statistics on Population and Migration in Geneva, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Statistical Committee.
The meeting examines modern solutions in conducting population censuses, developing migration statistics, using administrative data, and leveraging new sources of information.
Representing Belarus at the meeting were Deputy Chairman of the National Statistical Committee Aleksei Yarkovets and Head of the Directorate of Demographic Statistics and Population Census Irina Bichan. They presented planned approaches to digitalizing the statistical system, based on integrating data from various sources, improving processing methods, and implementing innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence.

One of the areas of experience presented was the development of a statistical population register as an element of the digital infrastructure of the statistical system. “The purpose of the statistical register is to combine information about respondents into a single system using a unified identifier,” Aleksei Yarkovets explained. “The plan is to feed the register with administrative data on people’s economic and social status, including information on births, deaths, migration, employment, education, and marital status changes.”
In addition, Belarusian statisticians plan to use AI for data cleansing and normalization, and for identifying anomalies and contradictions. “At the same time, we are considering the use of anonymized mobile positioning data as an additional source for analyzing migration and the actual spatial distribution of the population,” the deputy chairman of the National Statistical Committee added.
The National Statistical Committee’s strategic goal is to create a modern digital environment for data work and statistical production. The participation of Belarusian statisticians in UNECE events allows for the exchange of experience with global experts.
