Belarusian nuclear power plant to get operation license by year end

SOCHI, 14 May (BelTA) – The state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant will get the license to operate a nuclear power unit by the end of 2018, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk during the Atomexpo forum in Sochi on 14 May.

“The operating personnel should get the license before nuclear fuel is loaded into the reactor. I think it will happen by the end of the year,” said Mikhail Mikhadyuk.

The application for the Belarusian nuclear power plant license has been submitted to the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor). According to the deputy energy minister, experts are now evaluating the document. The energy and nuclear research institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is taking part in the work.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built using the Russian standard Generation III+ design AES-2006 near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
