Belarus joins BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – A Belarusian delegation led by Chairman of the Supreme Court Andrei Shved is participating in the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi, BelTA learned from the Supreme Court’s press service.

The Belarusian delegation’s participation in the forum began with a series of bilateral meetings held by Chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus Andrei Shved. During his meeting with Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, Andrei Shved highlighted the high level of cooperation achieved between the two countries in political, economic, scientific, technological, and other fields. He also stressed the importance of mutual support on international legal platforms.

Cooperation between the courts of general jurisdiction of Belarus and the courts of Iran is carried out under a treaty on legal assistance in civil and criminal matters, the chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus noted. According to him, the parties fulfill their obligations in good faith, and no systemic issues have been identified. He assured that the Supreme Court of Belarus remains open to a productive partnership built on the principles of mutual respect, trust, and equality.

During his meeting with Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Russia Igor Krasnov, Andrei Shved noted that regular bilateral contacts help maintain a shared up-to-date vision of the current situation and open up new opportunities for cooperation. The heads of the supreme judicial bodies discussed immediate steps to implement the memorandum of understanding and cooperation signed between the supreme courts of Belarus and Russia, and outlined areas for further interaction.

Andrei Shved highlighted how valuable Russian experience is for Belarus when it comes to areas such as the use of information technology and artificial intelligence in judicial activities, the creation of electronic case files, the digitalization of court proceedings, and cross-border tech-driven legal cooperation between judicial bodies.

During his meeting with Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India Surya Kant, the head of Belarus’s highest judicial body noted that a bilateral dialogue has been maintained between the two countries across a wide range of issues for many years.

According to Andrei Shved, strengthening bilateral international relations involves intensive commercial cooperation, boosting tourism and cultural exchange, as well as effectively combating transnational crime. “This also requires efficient judicial cooperation. Organizing and holding joint events on pressing legal issues will step up the exchange of experience, facilitate the discussion and resolution of practical matters, and help achieve common goals,” the chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus said during the meeting.

At his meeting with President of the Supreme People’s Court of China Zhang Jun, Andrei Shved emphasized that Belarus and China are building truly friendly and trust-based relations. Deep political dialogue and solid economic cooperation serve as the foundation for this interaction.

“It is also symbolic that our meeting is taking place in the year when the Belarusian president signed the Directive ‘On the practical implementation of the all-weather and comprehensive strategic partnership of the Republic of Belarus with the People’s Republic of China.’ This strategic course sets the highest standards for the legal system as well, aiming to strengthen interstate trust,” Andrei Shved said. Afterward, the parties discussed issues of judicial and legal cooperation, as well as promising areas of partnership.

The main events of the forum are scheduled for 5 September.

BRICS is an informal interstate association of the world’s leading emerging economies, founded in 2006 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum with the participation of the economy ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Bilateral relations between BRICS nations are built on the principles of non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit.

Belarus holds the status of a BRICS partner country, which it acquired in November 2024. This partner status implies that the country can participate in various events of the organization, exchange experience and best practices, and cooperate with other member states. The partnership provides access to resources and technologies, as well as opportunities to join joint projects. Furthermore, partner status opens up additional avenues for trade and investment, which is particularly vital for Belarus as it seeks to diversify its economic ties.

Partner countries can sign up to BRICS final documents, thereby expanding their geographical reach and amplifying the association’s voice in international affairs.
