Belarus calls for non-discriminatory approaches to cooperation on climate

Belarus calls for non-discriminatory approaches to cooperation on climate

DUBAI, 30 November (BelTA) - International cooperation on climate must be based on a non-discriminatory and equitable basis, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik told reporters on the sidelines of the The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change  in Dubai, BelTA has learned.

The main event of the conference will be the World Climate Action Summit. Belarus will be represented by President Aleksandr Lukashenko. The climate forum, which is held under the auspices of the UN, is the most important event in terms of action to combat the climate change.

About 150 heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit.

"The participation of Belarus at the highest level in this event emphasizes the importance that our country attaches to environmental safety and environmental protection. Belarus has always taken a very responsible approach to its international obligations. We fulfill all obligations related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. We have already exceeded our indicators and are progressively moving in this direction," Sergei Aleinik said.

He also noted that Belarus is "working on the restoration of forests and today the volume of this work exceeds that of deforestation." It is no coincidence, the minister said, that Belarus is called the lungs of Europe.

"Climate issues unite all countries. This is an unifying issue on the international agenda. We will contribute towards strengthening international cooperation on climate issues. This cooperation should be built on a non-discriminatory, fair and inclusive basis and contribute to the solution of global issues," the diplomat said.

Sergei Aleinik stressed that Belarus attaches great importance to environmental issues. It is no coincidence that the problems of environmental and biological security are included in separate sections in the draft concept of national security, which is currently undergoing public discussion.
