MINSK, 19 July (BelTA) – UNDP makes a significant contribution to economic development of Belarus, Deputy Economy Minister Andrei Kartun said as he met with experts of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The meeting was timed to coincide with the completion of the mission of UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Alexandra Solovieva, BelTA learned from the press service of the Economy Ministry.
According to the deputy minister, over the past four years, UNDP has made a significant contribution to the development of a number of key sectors of the Belarusian economy. “They include the development of small and medium-sized businesses through the promotion of employment and self-employment in small and medium-sized towns, as well as support for economic initiatives, promotion of competitiveness and innovation for inclusive development. UNDP provided expert support during the development of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development for the period until 2035,” said Andrei Kartun.
UNDP’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular its assistance in strengthening Belarus’ healthcare system resilience, deserves special attention.
The deputy economy minister expressed hope that the international experience and knowledge of UNDP in the field of development, as well as a wide network of experts, would further contribute to the development of Belarus at the national and local level.
The participants of the meeting outlined promising areas for further cooperation. There are plans to continue supporting small and medium-sized businesses, to strengthen public-private partnership, to improve approaches to the development and efficiency assessment of government programs, to prepare documents on the socio-economic development of the country.
At the end of the meeting, Andrei Kartun thanked Alexandra Solovieva for cooperation.
