MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – Tourism and the supply of trucks are seen as very promising avenues of cooperation between Belarus and Karelia, Belarus’ Forestry Minister Aleksandr Kulik said as he met with Head of the Republic of Karelia of Russia Artur Parfenchikov, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus and Karelia have established close contacts and this cooperation grows stronger year to year. Western sanctions are pushing us to explore cooperation options across the board. Thus, three years ago we could not even dream of having $102.6 million in trade. In fact, in 2020 it was just $38 million,” said Aleksandr Kulik.

According to him, supplies of Belarusian trucks, in particular those produced by BelAZ and MAZ, have increased sixfold. “There are plans to supply forestry equipment to Karelia. For example, the Amkodor enterprise is making much progress in this field. The expected delivery of 54 machines is going to give a serious impetus to business relations,” the forestry minister emphasized. Karelia supplies building materials to Belarus, in particular granite.

“Cooperation potential has not been exhausted. In the future, we want to promote the tourism sector. Groups of capercaillie and bear hunters have already visited Karelia. Belarus also has something to offer to tourists. I’m glad that we are growing in all areas of activity,” Aleksandr Kulik said.

The seventh meeting of the Belarus-Karelia cooperation working group is scheduled for 22 December. The participants of the group are set to discuss cooperation in various fields of activity.
