Minister: A program to build and upgrade pig farms will be developed in Belarus

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – A program to build and upgrade pig breeding complexes will be developed in Belarus, Agriculture and Food Minister Sergei Bartosh told reporters following a meeting to discuss the country’s pig breeding industry hosted by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, BelTA has learned.

The minister noted that it is necessary to restore the previously achieved level of pork production. “In order to do this, we need to build new complexes to replace small low-tech facilities that can no longer produce the necessary amount of products,” the minister said.

Sergei Bartosh went on saying: “An appropriate program will be developed; we plan to build about 14 large complexes in the country. In addition to that, we need to come to grips with the issue of the renovation of existing complexes.”

The minister spoke in detail about the introduction of new technologies that will help pig farms provide the meat processing industry with the necessary amount of raw materials. “Some complexes are over 20 years old and have 3,500 head. Such complexes have low profitability, and some operate in the red. At the same time, the profitability of new complexes is 3% or more,” he informed.

The minister emphasized that the new technologically advanced complexes will be able to achieve good weight gain at lower feed costs.

“The weight gain will be higher at new technologically advanced complexes,” he noted. “Large complexes will have about 24,000 head, they will replace several small farms. We have calculated that this number of head is the most optimal,” the minister said.

In addition to that, much attention will be paid to order and discipline in the industry. The issue of feed provision was discussed separately. Sergei Bartosh noted: “Regarding the president’s earlier instruction to purchase grain from Russia, everything is going on well here, the first deliveries will start soon.”

A reminder, at the meeting to discuss the country’s pig breeding industry Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that it is necessary to upgrade pig breeding complexes. “As we have already said, we need to upgrade pig breeding complexes. Almost 70% of these complexes were built more than 20 years ago. There should be a specific program to bring these complexes into shape,” the head of state emphasized. He added that many of them are outdated and have a high degree of wear and tear.
