Belarus sells peat products to over 20 countries in 2023

MINSK, 20 December (BelTA) – Belarus exported peat products to more than 20 countries in 2023, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich told a press conference in BelTA’s press center.

In January-November 2023, Beltopgaz peat plants delivered 141,000 tonnes of peat products to foreign markets for fuel and non-fuel purposes. In value terms it is more than $11 million. Belarusian peat products were shipped to 21 countries, including CIS states, Georgia, Türkiye and European countries.

“Special attention was paid to the development of cooperation in the peat sector with Chinese companies. In January-November 2023 Belarusian peat enterprises shipped 1,900 tonnes of non-fuel peat products to China,” Viktor Karankevich added. Three Belarusian peat plants have accreditation for deliveries to China: Glinka, Vitebsktorf and Turshovka.

Work is in full swing to enter new markets in the eastern direction. For example, in December 2023, a memorandum was signed for pilot supplies of Belarusian peat substrates to Vietnam. Issues of expanding cooperation with Russian companies are also in the pipeline.

In 2023, Belarusian peat industry organizations extracted 2.2 million tonnes of peat, which makes it possible to fully meet domestic demand for peat. In January-November 2023, peat plants produced 888,300 tonnes of dried peat and peat briquettes. Some 528,200 tonnes of which were supplied for the needs of enterprises and 258,200 tonnes for the population.

Peat briquette plants supply their products to utilities organizations and population as well as for cement industry and agriculture. Belarus ranks first in the world in terms of peat extraction and first in the world in terms of briquette production.
