MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – Strategic projects should be the result of systematic and focused work, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV Channel as he commented on the government meeting chaired by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 20 October to discuss ways to improve the system of planning and overseeing the implementation of strategic projects, BelTA has learned.

“All countries face an important task which is to find new sources for growth, because development through increasing efficiency or modernization of traditional industries is quite limited. Of course, a real breakthrough or a qualitative leap can be achieved through either the development of fundamentally new industries in traditional sectors, or with the help of new scientific discoveries, new technologies that are breakthrough and advanced on a global scale,” Roman Golovchenko said.

Belarus has developed a fairly effective system of investment projects, aimed at expansion and modernization of existing production facilities, as well as the launch of small projects on the regional scale - One District - One Project program, which is generally making strong progress, the prime minister said. “Here, everything goes well at this level. It is necessary, of course, to strengthen control and demand for the timing and quality of implementation. But everything is all right here,” the Belarusian head of government said. “The main question that the president put is how we can ensure that large-scale projects like BelNPP or the Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation are implemented in the country on a regular basis, and how we can make this process natural, not born with great pains, but to be the product of continuous and focused effort. I think we have found certain steps in this direction during our lively discussion.”

“The president instructed us to submit to him in October a plan of how we are going to work in this direction. In general, we talked about how the country will develop in the new five-year period, i.e. what fundamentally new industries will be developed. This is probably the main task that we will have to deal with in the very near future,” Roman Golovchenko added.
