PM comments on Belarus’ preparations to mark Great Victory anniversary

PM comments on Belarus’ preparations to mark Great Victory anniversary

MINSK, 24 October (BelTA) - Young people should feel a sense of involvement in the great history of the country, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the first meeting of the national organizing committee to prepare for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, BelTA has learned.

“A great deal of work is ahead of us to ensure a high-level organization of these events - both at the national and local scale. Our first task is attention to veterans. We must use all opportunities for them to feel additional care and attention during the days of the celebrations. Unfortunately, their number is decreasing. According to the Labor and Social Security Ministry, there are about 9,000 veterans of the Great Patriotic War and citizens, affected by the consequences of the war in Belarus today. Of them only 1,343 are war veterans,” Roman Golovchenko said.

The second larger task for every Belarusian is to understand the importance of these celebrations. “These are indeed the dates that should penetrate into the heart of everyone living in our country. Belarus is the successor of the best traditions of spirituality that existed during the Soviet Union. No matter how difficult the situation was in the first years after the collapse of the USSR, during the period of statehood formation, we have never forgotten to mark these dates, and have always celebrated them at the highest state level. Therefore, today we are one of the few countries in the post-Soviet space, where the Great Victory is sacredly honored. It is very important that the young generation, which was born in the post-Soviet period, felt their involvement in the great history of our country in a new way,” the prime minister stressed.

The third task is timely and quality implementation of the action plan. “The most important thing is to rule out formalism. If this happens, it will be the main drawback of our work. Here we need to find a place for representatives of all population groups, everyone who consider themselves patriots of the Fatherland. The implementation of the action plan in full and at a high level will be the main assessment of the work of the organizing committee. Therefore, at the next meetings we will consider in detail the preparations for the implementation of the plan's activities. The key solemn events will be held in the city capital, but it is also important to hold events in all corners of our country at a very high level,”  the head of government said.
