Lebedev: Belarus has great infrastructure to host 2023 CIS Games

MINSK, 20 December (BelTA) – Belarus has great infrastructure for hosting the 2023 CIS Games, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told journalists, BelTA has learned.

A regular meeting of the CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives is taking place in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk on 20 December. The permanent representatives of the CIS countries will discuss matters related to the 2023 CIS Games. The competitions will be held in Belarus from 3 to 15 August 2023 and will feature 20 sports.

“Belarus has an excellent infrastructure for hosting sports competitions, there are many facilities that allow holding major international sports competitions. So the CIS countries wholeheartedly supported  Belarus’ initiative to host these games and are about to start to prepare for them. We will also discuss our preparations for the games and how to bring as many athletes as possible. We really hope that next year no coronaviruses, flu and other diseases will prevent us from holding these games on Belarusian soil,” Sergei Lebedev said.

Hospitality is a hallmark of Belarusians, the chairman of the CIS Executive Committee noted. “Many people enjoy visiting Belarus. And we will try to do our best to make sure that these games are held at a high level,” he added.

About 3,000 people are expected to take part in the Games in one way or another. The number includes athletes, coaches, judges, medical personnel and other persons. Competitions are proposed to be held in Minsk, Borisov, Soligorsk, Molodechno, Brest, Orsha, Zhlobin, Grodno, Mogilev.

Speaking at the meeting of the council was First Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Dorokhovich.

“In order to be a great host for the 2023 CIS Games, an organizing committee has been put together on behalf of the prime minister. An action plan has been developed and is being implemented. It is proposed to hold the opening and closing ceremonies of the games on 5 and 13 August 2023 at Minsk Arena,” Aleksandr Dorokhovich said.

According to him, the concept of the 2023 CIS Games provides for holding the competitions in all regions of Belarus. “Sports venues, accommodation and menus have been chosen, we are in talks on the participation in certain sports of delegations from Mongolia, China, Cuba, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia. Work on organizing the games continues as planned,” the first deputy minister added.
