Belarus, SCO seen as pillar of new security systems in Eurasia, world

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) - Belarus and the SCO countries will become a pillar of new security systems in Eurasia and the world, Belarusian Defense Minister Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin said at the meeting of the defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Astana, Kazakhstan, BelTA learned from the press service of the Defense Ministry.

Viktor Khrenin expressed confidence that Belarus and the SCO countries will become a pillar in the development of new security systems in Eurasia and the world. According to him, amid global geopolitical transformations the usual architecture of international security has actually ceased to exist. “One of the results of this situation is the degradation and breakdown of the arms control system and the unleashing of another round of the arms race,” he said.

According to the defense minister, Belarus is interested in restoring the influence of international security and cooperation organizations and their effective activities in preventing and resolving military conflicts.

“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and its member states can become a pillar in the development of new security systems in Eurasia and the world. We are in favor of peaceful resolution of any disputes and conflicts. Belarus has decided to join the SCO and has now completed all the necessary procedures for joining the organization. Belarus and the SCO will be able to ensure the construction of a fair and balanced world order based on an equal, joint, indivisible, comprehensive and sustainable security system, ensuring the interests of each state in accordance with the norms and principles of international law,” Viktor Khrenin said.
