About 100 liver transplant surgeries performed in Belarus annually

MINSK, 3 April (BelTA) – The 985th liver transplant surgery has been performed in Belarus, Director of the Minsk Research Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology, chief non-staff transplant surgeon of the Healthcare Ministry Oleg Rummo told reporters, BelTA has learned.

On 3 April the medical community of Belarus marks the 15th anniversary of the country’s first liver transplant surgery. On this occasion, an exposition opened at the Minsk Research Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology.

“It is symbolic that on the night of 2 to 3 April, a liver transplant surgery was also performed at our facility. The 985th liver transplant surgery kicked off at night and was over at dawn. To be honest, we did not calculate it, it just happened,” said Oleg Rummo.

According to him, about 100 such surgeries have been performed annually in recent years. Last year, 96 liver transplant surgeries were carried out. “80-90 Belarusian nationals are on the waiting list every year. Belarusians do not have to wait long for this surgery. If such a surgery is not urgent, the waiting time does not exceed three months. This is a very good result on a global scale. Not all developed countries can afford it,” the director of the center said. He emphasized that emergency operations are performed immediately.
