Elements of ancient buildings unveiled in Novogrudok

GRODNO, 9 July (BelTA) – Archeologists unveiled elements of ancient buildings which date back to the 12th – 18th centuries in the center of Novogrudok, BelTA learned from the Novogrudok District Executive Committee.

The excavation was done because of the construction of the Europe Hotel in the center of the town. During the works archeologists found elements of buildings which are placed above even older buildings. Specialists believe that there are at least four layers of buildings which date back to different centuries.

According to senior researcher of the NASB History Institute Irina Ganetskaya, at present it is possible to date only two layers. It is likely that the upper building dates back to the 17th – 18th centuries. Probably it was a tavern because there are a lot of clay and glass utensils in that layer.

In the following layer archeologists unveiled a big timber blocking which dates back to the 16th – 17th centuries. Specialists believe that lower layers may date back to the 11th – 12th centuries.

After the excavation works elements of ancient buildings will be dismantled and conserved. They will be later displayed at one of the museums.
