MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) - Belarus is leading in the gender parity rankings on several criteria, Head of the Multilateral Diplomacy Directorate of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Irina Velichko said during the work of the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee that deals with human rights, humanitarian affairs and social matters.

The general discussion highlighted the situation with the women’s rights in various countries. The Belarusian diplomat emphasized that women have already made significant progress in their rights in the modern world, so they should not be considered as dependent members of society.

“Yes, gender stereotypes such as the glass ceiling or slippery floor still exist. Women, however, should determine by themselves the amount of authority and workload in society, which both meets their interests and power. Such conditions for women have been created in Belarus. We have formed a society where men and women have equal rights and opportunities,” Irina Velichko said.

Belarus ranks 41st among 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2023. The country ranks 7th in Economic Participation and Opportunity and goes first in Health and Survival.

“Women's participation in the decision-making process is ensured in Belarus. The share of women in the Belarusian parliament is more than 35%. Women make up more than 70% of the government and judiciary personnel. Belarus’ civil society has a woman’s face,” the representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

For a number of years, the actual female unemployment rate in Belarus has been lower than the male one. This is facilitated by efforts to reintegrate women in the labor market. In 2023, the digital service “Step into a profession” was developed as part of the measures of the Labor Market and Employment Promotion program for 2021-2025,” the diplomat said.

“The Belarusian labor market is characterized by a higher level of education among women than men. Assistance to women in opening their own business is aimed at expanding women's economic opportunities,” Irina Velichko added.
