Cucumber Day in Shklov

Belarus “cucumber capital”, the city of Shklov, boasts its record-high cucumber harvests (almost every resident of the city grows cucumbers) and its traditional festival which has been annually held in August since 2006. On 11 August 2018 dozens of guests from Belarus and abroad came to the city of the biggest cucumber plantations to try the Shklov product. Shklov is well-known for its varied and unusual cuisine, including cucumber jam, “ogurtsovka”, a strong alcoholic beverage, and cucumber lemonade.

The 12th summer harvest festival Cucumber Day kicked off in Shklov in style. The central square hosted the Cucumber Parade and the Marriage of Cucumber theatrical performance. The festival extended to the city park, where guests had a chance to take part in exciting contests such as the best cucumber dish or cucumber costume, cucumber eating competitions, try their hand in artistic carving on vegetables and salting cucumbers according to the "grandmother's" recipes.
